NLSC Members Highlight Disaster and Emergency Preparedness in Their Community
The National Language Service Corps (NLSC) is comprised of service-oriented Members who join the organization in an effort to volunteer their language skills and serve to bridge gaps in their respective language communities. In honor of this year’s National Volunteer Week (April 23 - 29), the NLSC has asked its Members about their volunteer service in their communities; particularly any experiences related to disaster relief or emergency preparedness.

NLSC Members—A Bridge to their Communities
Since the
inception of the National Language Service Corps (NLSC), Members have expressed
an on-going desire to use their language
[skills] for the good of all. The initial call to action challenged Members
to be a bridge to their communities, and
language speakers nationwide answered the call identifying themselves as ready
and willing to serve their government
and the global community.

The NLSC issues volunteer challenge to its membership
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported
approximately 62.6 million people volunteered for an organization between
September, 2012 – 2013. Additionally, volunteers spent a median of 50 hours on
volunteer activities during that same period. Last April, the National Language
Service Corps (NLSC) challenged its membership to volunteer their language
skills in service of others during National Volunteer Week 2013.
